All about the Red

I’ve worked in the fitness industry for over 17 years however, I did not know that drinking red wine ‘could’ help you burn belly fat!! As a result, I had to dig deeper to find out how.

The Telegraph reports, that research carried out by Washington State University, has shown that an ingredient in grapes, berries and red wine, known as Resveratrol which is one of many Polyphenols, can turn excess flab into calorie-burning “beige” fat.

Diets containing resveratrol, which is found in red wine and berries, could help combat obesity, by converting white fat into beige fat which burns lipids (fats) off as heat, helping to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction.

But the Professor Min Du, from Washington State University in the US. does suggest, and I would have to agree, that fruit containing resveratrol is more beneficial than red wine, as many of the beneficial Polyphenols (Resveratrol) are insoluble and therefore get filtered out during the wine making process.

Below is a list of foods containing Resveratrol:


  1. Red Grapes – The fruit’s resveratrol content comes from its skin, the Mayo Clinicreported.


  1. Grape juice – Similar benefits to grapes and wine


  1. Peanuts


  1. Blueberries – Although they contain less resveratrol than grapes, they are still a great source of other antioxidants, dietary fibre, vitamins C and K and manganese.
